Earthquake Yellowstone Volcano

The supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park has been hit with more than 400 earthquakes since June 12. Researchers say it's nothing to be alarmed about, though.

Earthquake swarms account for about 50 percent of the seismic activity recorded at Yellowstone. Swarms occur when many earthquakes take place over several weeks or months, with no clear sequence—unlike traditional earthquakes, where there is a main event, then a series of aftershocks.

Yellowstone has had a turbulent June. In just two weeks, the supervolcano that lies underneath the national park was hit with 878 earthquakes. The dense series of earthquakes, called an earthquake swarm, began on June 12. Within one week, the USGS had already recorded 464 earthquakes.

Yellowstone supervolcano was recently hit with over 450 earthquakes, prompting scientists to closely monitor the area. The first of the swarm of earthquakes began on June 12 and continued in the following days, including up to a 4.5 magnitude earthquake.

Yellowstone commonly experiences “earthquake swarms”—a series of earthquakes over a short period of time in a localized area. The largest swarm occurred in 1985, with more than 3,000 earthquakes recorded during three months on the northwest side of the park.

MORE than 2,500 earthquakes have been rumbling beneath the surface of the potentially catastrophic Yellowstone volcano, prompting fears that it is about to blow.

Yellowstone includes one of the most dangerous volcanic calderas in the world, and it is feared that a major eruption, that could bring nuclear winter like effects, is long overdue. A series of earthquake swarms, that it was feared could trigger the volcano, has been rumbling since June 12.
